CAMEROON: CHANGE and CHALLENGES on November 8 & 9

November 8, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:30 pm

Perspectives on one of Africa’s emerging

armed conflicts, regional influences, and prospects for peace.

Cameroon, a resource-rich country in Central Africa, is composed of two parts: the larger was under French colonial rule, the smaller under British. Populations of the two areas speak the corresponding language, French or English, in addition to local languages. The English-speaking (“Anglophone”) minority sees decreasing autonomy and increasing marginalization. Nonviolent protests began in 2016 but later turned to violent action. Today over 1,800 people have been killed and half a million displaced in the conflict. Some Anglophones seek an independent state (which some call “Ambazonia”); others seek autonomy, federalism, or some form of special status for the Anglophone regions.

There is a significant Cameroonian diaspora in the United States. At this conference, Cameroonian, American, and other scholars and experts will offer perspectives on the origins of the conflict; existing peacemaking efforts; lessons from other peace processes; and regional, economic, civil society, cultural and other factors. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.
