SUMMARY:CAMEROON: CHANGE and CHALLENGES on November 8 & 9
DESCRIPTION:Perspectives on one of Africa’s emerging \narmed conflicts\, regional influences\, and prospects for peace. \nCameroon\, a resource-rich country in Central Africa\, is composed of two parts: the larger was under French colonial rule\, the smaller under British. Populations of the two areas speak the corresponding language\, French or English\, in addition to local languages. The English-speaking (“Anglophone”) minority sees decreasing autonomy and increasing marginalization. Nonviolent protests began in 2016 but later turned to violent action. Today over 1\,800 people have been killed and half a million displaced in the conflict. Some Anglophones seek an independent state (which some call “Ambazonia”); others seek autonomy\, federalism\, or some form of special status for the Anglophone regions. \nThere is a significant Cameroonian diaspora in the United States. At this conference\, Cameroonian\, American\, and other scholars and experts will offer perspectives on the origins of the conflict; existing peacemaking efforts; lessons from other peace processes; and regional\, economic\, civil society\, cultural and other factors. Questions and discussion will be encouraged. \nFriday\, November 8\n10:00AM-5:30PM \nSaturday\, November 9\n10:00AM-3:30PM \nUniversity of Massachusetts Boston\nCampus Center\, 3rd Floor\, Ballroom A \n
